MTC Week 5 - Field Prep
This week fue sin problemas! It began with interviews from the branch presidency. As I talked to Brother Holmes, he gave me some great advice. I paraphrased his words to something like this: "With respect to the past, learn from it. With respect to the future, prepare for it. But push them both to the side and forget about them. Focus on today, because you can only control what happens today." It was really helpful. I have found more and more that when we lose ourselves in service, that our selflessness will change us when we don't even know it. In this week's devotional we learned that if you want to be happy, then lose yourself in this work. I'm not just serving for me, but for so many others. Those I talk to on the street, the people that rob me of my stuff ;) those I help and invite to come unto Christ, and also so I can be a better husband to my wife, and a better father to my kids. I'm just pumped to get out to El Salvador.
The language continues to go well. Apparently the other night my roommate heard me spit out a crazy Spanish phrase in my sleep, so that's weird haha. He said it was something he couldn't understand at all but it was definitely Spanish. And with only 8 days left before we leave, I'm slightly worried about the language, pero todo es posible con fe! Also, we got our TRAVEL PLANS yesterday! For those of you interested, our travel plan is as follows:
We fly out this Sunday evening at 11:40 pm to Atlanta, arriving at 5:14 am (3:14 am MST). Then fly to San Salvador at 10:04 am (8:04 am MST) and arrive there at 11:45 am MST.
All of us are getting anxious to go, so Sunday could not come quicker. We had our final TRC lesson this week, and it was a member present lesson which is just a volunteer that comes and participates with the missionaries. Our member happened to be one of the Newell's kids from the home ward! I think it was Natalie Newell, not sure her first name but yeah, it was nice to see a familiar face. Once we got in the lesson, I asked how Jessica was doing. She immediately started crying, just sobbing. It immediately got real. Apparently there was a pretty bad earthquake in Ecuador where her family lives, and it is a bad situation for all of her family down there. Even though our Spanish abilities couldn't keep up, we did our best to help her feel peace. We shared a quick message about how in our lives we have experiences that bring us happiness and some that bring us pain and sorrow. We told her how she can find comfort through the Book of Mormon. It was the first real genuine missionary experience I have had at the MTC.
My thought this week comes from the introduction of the Book of Mormon. It is commonly overlooked, but I have found great counsel from this beginning preface. In one line referring to the Book of Mormon it says, "It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come." And continues saying that the Book of Mormon is an "additional witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that all who will come unto him and obey the laws and ordinances of his gospel may be saved." I encourage you to read the intro, and once you're finished to continue reading. :)
